Almost all countries outside of the EU require a certificate of health with details of the dog or cat involved, vaccinations given and any tests/treatments performed by the vet. The one major exception is the USA which only requires a private health check done by a vet within a few days of the flight.
As a first step, ring DEFRA/AHVLA/APHA - Carlisle 01228 403 600 or 01900 700471 option 1 then option 3 or email your enquiry to PetExports@apha.gsi.gov.uk. Ask for an application form (EXA1) for the export of cats and/or dogs for the country you are going to along with the Export Health Certificate and veterinary notes.
N.B. DEFRA/AHVLA/APHA has reorganised. Carlisle Animal Health Office (Centre for International Trade - Carlisle, Eden Bridge House, Lowther Street, Carlisle, Cumbria, CA3 8DX) has now taken over all Mainland GB Export Health Certification for Cats and dogs from the regional offices.
