Home Countries DEFRA Numbers FAQ

Canada - information and requirements for the importation of cats and dogs.

There is no official quarantine for cats and dogs entering Canada from the United Kingdom. UK is recognised by Canada as a rabies free country.

Veterinary paperwork Requirements if Rabies Vaccination has not been given and for Air Transat flights

An Official Export Health certificate obtainable from DEFRA and signed within 72 hours of flight (email enquiry to PetExports@apha.gsi.gov.uk For urgent enquiries ring Carlisle 01228 403 600 option 1 then option 3). This must be applied for a minimum of two weeks before the flight. This also acts as the fitness to fly certificate. It is advisable that dogs and cats are identified by either microchip or by permanent tattoo.

Minimum Veterinary paperwork Requirements if rabies vaccination has been given

Rabies vaccination - Preferably in a Pet Passport issued by your vet.

To obtain the Pet Passport, you must first have your pet microchipped by your vet. The vet must then vaccinate your pet against rabies. There is no waiting time between date of vaccination and the flight. Your pet is now ready to go.

Dogs under 8 months old also require other vaccinations (DHPPi).

If you do intend your pet to return to the UK then the Rabies vaccination must have been given at least 21 days prior to re-entry.

Rule Change for pets entering UK from Canada after 1st Jan 2012 –blood test no longer required. Please see https://www.gov.uk/take-pet-abroad

Airlines require assurance that your pet is healthy enough to fly. Therefore your pet must be inspected by a vet shortly prior to the flight (usually within a few days, for BA and Air Canada up to 10 days before the flight). The vet must then issue a fitness to fly (or private health) certificate or sign, date and stamp the relevant clinical examination section of the passport (page 28/29). Alternatively the DEFRA Export Health Certificate will cover this requirement.

NB DEFRA Health Certificate is now advisable for all shipments.

International pet travel requires the use of an IATA (International Air Transport Association) approved air kennel that allow the animal to stand up without touching the top of the box, lie down and turn around.

With information on the measurements of the animal(s) we can build Kennels (wood frame, plywood sides, wire mesh front) to fit. Flights can be arranged fom Heathrow/Gatwick and sometimes Manchester, Aberdeen, Glasgow or Edinburgh.
